Khoo-su-wan, Nan-ta-wan [Mi-Khoo] mikhoonan@yahoo.com
videographer, photographer & graphic designer
I am a graduate of the Thai College of Fine Arts in Thailand. I graduated in 1979 with an Associates Degree. During my three-year
tenure, I learned many different art fundamentals including painting, sculpture, drawing, ceramics, etching, architecture, interior design
and art history. Upon graduation, I worked for a Thai magazine and then a graphic design firm. I also worked in arts and crafts.
Although I gained work experience, I truly felt that I wanted to further my studies in design by continuing my education. So, in 1983,
I arrived in the United States and began my studies in Visual Communication at UCLA as I worked part-time at a Thai newspaper.
At UCLA I learned graphic and visual communication design and how to employ the visual arts in my print production assignments.
In 1988, I moved to New York City to find work in my field and gain more experience. This was a big step because I was on my own in
a big city without family around for the first time. I worked as a freelance designer for a small advertising company, and then at a graphic
design firm. Next, I created graphic design at a variety of publishing companies. My first position was at desktop publishing company
working as the assistant art director—the responsibilities included helping, organizing and doing design layouts for the art director.
From then to today, I have been working for almost twenty years, spending my free time taking classes during the evenings and on
weekends. I frequently attend photography seminars. I prefer to keep up to date with new technologies. I have taken computer classes
at the Fashion Institution of Technology, The School of Visual Art, The New School, Pratt Institute and Cooper Union. I learned how to
combine a positive work/study ethic which enriches my work and personal life.
As part of my education, ten years ago I enrolled at Empire State College where I studied photography which has aided me in
pursuing my interest in documentaries. I spend my free time researching photo journalism and assisting a professional photographer.
I learned not just how to take photographs but rather to see through the lens with direct hands-on experience.
I am a non-traditional artist who enjoys branching into unknown areas as well as exploring new frontiers and creating art by
implementing trans-media platforms. My work conveys a modern message to a constantly changing art market. Over the past
two years I have been diligently assisting a filmmaker with his visually stunning documentary of famous artists' homes
and sanctuaries. I have filmed and edited B-roll for this particular project.
In a similar light, I have also contributed to productions as an assistant for the Sundance Channel. Most recently, I conceptualized
and produced several short art documentaries. A few of these digital shorts have been presented at international film festivals.
